The play “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike”
On October 27 at 7:00 PM, in the Small Hall of the “Mazā ģilde” (Small Guild), the “Vecpilsētas teātris” (Old Town Theatre) — under the direction of Edīte Neimane — presents Christopher Durang’s comedy *Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike*, a play that reflects on a bygone era.
In 2013, *Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike* received the highest honor in American theatre: the Tony Award. The main characters owe their names to their parents’ passion for the plays of Anton Chekhov. In reality, the production only touches upon these Chekhovian archetypes; the action takes place in a small American town, home to a lonely, middle-aged pair—Vanya and his adopted sister, Sonia.
Neither of them has a job, having spent the better part of their lives caring for their ailing parents. Financial support and the household bills are covered by their sister, Masha—a film star who owns the house.
Vanya and Sonia spend their days discussing their lives, loneliness, and love; they bicker and listen to the peculiar prophecies of Cassandra, the housekeeper—though they don’t truly believe in them. The arrival of Masha and her young lover, Spike, disrupts their established daily routine. With her career nearing its end, Masha has decided to sell the house. The situation is further complicated by the unexpected arrival of a young girl named Nina. The play offers a good-natured, slightly ironic look at a bygone era, lost opportunities, longings, and hopes.
Tickets are available for purchase at the “Mazā ģilde” (Small Guild). Ticket prices are 5.00 EUR and 2.00 EUR (for schoolchildren, students, and pensioners).
The performance is organized by the Cultural and Folk Art Centre “Mazā ģilde” with the support of the Riga Municipality.
