The Middle Generation Folk Dance Ensemble “Sen Līgo” traces its roots back to 1975, when the middle generation group of Folk Dance Ensemble “Līgo” was first established. In the autumn of 2007, a new group was formed as former dancers from the main ensemble of Folk Dance Ensemble “Līgo” reunited. This newly formed middle generation group retained the name “Līgo”, while the longest-serving and most experienced dancers adopted the name “Sen Līgo” during a Christmas concert in Kuldīga on 19 December 2009, becoming an independent performing ensemble. For this reason, 2009 is regarded as the founding year of “Sen Līgo.”

Since its establishment, “Sen Līgo” has represented Latvia at several international folk festivals:

  • 2011 – Spišské Folklórne Slávnosti International Folklore Festival, Spišské Podhradie, Slovakia
  • 2012 – XVIII International Võru Folklore Festival, Estonia
  • 2014 – 51st European Festival of Folk Culture and Arts, Poland
  • 2017 – Nordic Culture Days, Stockholm, Sweden

In 2018, the ensemble reached the final round of the 21st Contemporary Folk Dance Choreography Competition with an original choreography created by its artistic director, Andis Lagzdiņš.

The ensemble has consistently achieved excellent results in the Riga Folk Dance Ensemble Reviews, earning the Highest Distinction in consecutive years, including scores of 45.8 and 46.0 points.

Today, “Sen Līgo” consists of 39 dancers and is led by Andis Lagzdiņš, with Ēvalds Lazarēvičs serving as accompanist.
