Middle Generation Folk Dance Ensemble “Līgo”
The Middle Generation Folk Dance Ensemble “Līgo” was established as the veterans’ ensemble of Folk Dance Ensemble “Līgo”, whose history dates back to 1945.
In 1950, Zinaīda Sama became the ensemble’s artistic director and transformed it into one of the largest and most distinguished amateur folk dance ensembles in Latvia. By 1958, the ensemble had grown to 127 dancers representing a wide range of professions. Sama was renowned for her exceptional ability to select tall, elegant, and expressive performers whose stage presence captivated audiences.
During the 1950s, the ensemble presented full-length performances at the Academic Drama Theatre and the Opera and Ballet Theatre, appeared in the ballet productions Brīvības sakta and Laima, and participated in the feature film Uz jauno krastu. One of the ensemble’s greatest achievements of the decade was its participation in the Latvian Literature and Arts Decade in Moscow in 1955. That same year, the ensemble won the Travelling Red Banner at the III Latvian Song and Dance Festival of the Latvian SSR. In 1957, the ensemble represented Latvia at the 6th World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow.
Following Zinaīda Sama, the ensemble was led by long-time dancer and assistant Uldis Heinsoo. Under his leadership, the ensemble was awarded the title of Folk Dance Ensemble in 1965, and two years later its members officially adopted the name “Līgo.” The ensemble was later directed by Jānis Upītis.
In 1975, Folk Dance Ensemble “Līgo” celebrated its 30th anniversary with a gala concert at the Opera and Ballet Theatre, featuring several generations of dancers, including Zinaīda Sama’s veteran ensemble. For this reason, 1975 is recognised as the founding year of the Middle Generation Folk Dance Ensemble “Līgo.”
Today, the ensemble is led by Jānis Purviņš, with Linda Tiļčika as rehearsal director and Solveiga Apsalone as accompanist.
